Will a squirrel eat the root or the carrot top?

Either part may be sampled. The orange root holds water and stored plant energy. The green top is exposed and easier to reach. A squirrel may also dig in loose soil without eating the carrot because the bed contains buried seeds, bulbs, insects, or a place to cache food.

One damaged plant is not enough to name the culprit. Rabbits usually feed close to the ground, voles work around roots and tunnels, deer can remove tops, and birds may disturb seedlings. Squirrels are most active in daylight, so a direct sighting or a small camera is more useful than a guess based on a missing leaf.

Carrot forms are not equal

Wild squirrels do not need cooked vegetables. The comparison matters mainly because table scraps often include butter, salt, sauces, or sweet glaze. Plain produce and a prepared side dish are different foods from a wildlife perspective.

Should carrots be put out for squirrels?

There is no need to feed carrots to healthy wild squirrels. The National Park Service advises against wildlife feeding because animals can change normal foraging and become conditioned to people. The same feeding spot can also collect waste and bring several animals into close contact.

If your goal is to support wildlife, protect native food plants and habitat instead of building a menu from the refrigerator. If local rules allow a managed feeder, review the broader food choices and feeding risks, keep the site clean, and do not use a carrot or any single item as the whole diet.

How to protect carrots without harming squirrels

Physical exclusion is more reliable than trying to frighten a hungry animal with a new smell each week. A rigid frame over the bed can support suitable mesh or row cover. Secure every edge so an animal cannot push underneath, and keep material taut enough to reduce entanglement risk. Open or remove covers when pollination or plant growth requires it.

• Cover newly seeded beds and tender tops first.
• Remove spilled bird seed near the vegetable plot.
• Harvest mature carrots rather than leaving them exposed.
• Keep compost and trash closed.
• Check barriers after wind and after garden work.

A fence that stops a ground animal may not stop a tree squirrel dropping from above. Look at the full route into the bed, including railings, branches, sheds, and overhead wires, before choosing a barrier.
